In 2022, OpenAI officially ushered in the era of artificial intelligence with the release of ChatGPT. As of 2024, this technology has become a part of nearly every aspect of daily life, from the smartphones in our pockets to the cars we drive. But how does AI perform in the healthcare sector? Recent research reveals that ChatGPT has outperformed doctors in diagnosing diseases.
ChatGPT Outperforms Doctors in Disease Diagnosis
A recent study was conducted to evaluate AI’s performance in the healthcare field, yielding surprising results. The experiment showed that doctors using ChatGPT performed slightly better than those without access to it. However, the most notable finding was that the AI tool independently scored higher than all the doctors combined in disease diagnosis.
Organized by the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, the study left Dr. Adam Rodman, an internal medicine specialist, astonished. Commenting on the results, he admitted he was “shocked.”
To elaborate, ChatGPT scored 90 points when diagnosing diseases under specific criteria. In comparison, doctors who utilized ChatGPT scored an average of 76 points, while those who did not use any AI tools scored an average of 74 points.
Dr. Rodman further analyzed the interactions between doctors and ChatGPT. His findings indicated that while the AI provided concrete details for diagnoses, many doctors remained unconvinced and adhered to their own judgments instead.
Dr. Rodman stated:
“When the AI offered insights they disagreed with, they unfortunately didn’t listen.”
